Louis' Union Station is a place of history, culture, and fun. Simply reschedule for another time."With its stunning architecture, rich past, and abundance of activities, it's no wonder Union Station has been a popular destination for over 100 years." By Samantha Marshall, Travel Writer You won’t have to miss out on an experience because of a tantrum. A good point to keep in mind: Although tickets are timed, if anyone in your party has a meltdown-tot or parent-and you have to cut your visit short, tickets are good for 90 days. If you’d like to avoid the crowds, a good time to visit the aquarium is first thing in the morning, and typically there are fewer crowds Monday through Wednesday. ![]() Make sure you note the time and location of where they’ll be, so you can pop by for a visit during your time at the aquarium. When you arrive at the aquarium, you’ll see a schedule featuring encounters with these animal “ambassadors.” Guests most often seek out the sloths, but don’t sleep on a little armadillo named Chico. The answer is simple: Water connects everything. Aquarium employees are often asked why there are land animals at the attraction. The aquarium is also home to a number of terrestrial animals-those who live on land instead of in the water. ![]() And at the last aquarium gallery, The Deep, you can watch illuminated jellyfish propel themselves through the tank. and 3 p.m.-those are the times each day that the aquarium’s curious river otters, Sawyer, Thatcher, and Finn, get a scrumptious meal at Changing Rivers. If it’s animal interactions you’re after, set an alarm for 11 a.m. each day, a diver can answer any questions you have about the animals while still underwater thanks to a special mask. Or go behind the scenes at Shark Canyon and watch the divers get ready to take a plunge into the 250,000-gallon tank, the aquarium’s largest, where sandbar sharks glide about. In the kitchens, you’ll get a peek at the preparation of the restaurant-quality seafood that feeds the hungry animals. Work up the courage to feel the backs of cownose rays and bamboo sharks that also populate the open tanks.Īnother big pro tip: Book a behind-the-scenes experience.Īt the Life Services area, you can watch aquarium pros concoct the saltwater that fills the tanks (if you’ve ever wondered how they get ocean water all the way to Missouri…they don’t. Sticking your hand in the appropriate tanks will give you a much more complete picture of what’s happening in our waterways (so will chatting with the aquarists stationed throughout the aquarium).Īt the Ocean Shore, you can feel for yourself the hard shell of a horseshoe crab or the spines of a sea urchin. “Touch everything” is a good guideline to follow at the aquarium. Submerge your hands in the home of the tiny aquatic nibblers, and let them snack on your dead skin. Global Rivers features the fish of South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia, including a doctor fish, one of the most talked-about experiences at the aquarium. Crappie, bass, paddlefish, and gar swim all around you. The first gallery, Confluence, hits close to home, showcasing the fish that populate the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. Once you’re actually inside the aquarium, each of the six galleries offers some fascinating creatures to peep. (Wondering what will go into the spot where the education center used to be? Look for an attraction called Selfie Express, a train-themed set with different backgrounds for photo opportunities, coming soon.) Now, as you stand next to the river otters, you can see information about their home, rather than reading about their environment before you’ve even seen the exhibit. If it’s been a minute since you’ve visited the aquarium, then you’ll notice one change right off the bat: Its conservation and education center, which used to be located at the entrance, is now integrated throughout the museum. ![]()

![]() ![]() Gideon Kendall's illustrations are a real pleasure, with bold colors and humorous expressions throughout that will draw the reader into the story.Do you love petting your Lystro or Bulbdog? Do you want to be able to pet all your dinos? Then this is the mod for you! Though there are a few stumbles in the rhythm, the overall idea and flow are fun and upbeat, ideal for animated storytelling that will excite our little readers. Lynn Plourde writes in simple rhyme, great for literary development and memorization. For instance, what would it actually be like if the longest dinosaur was at the playground? Imagining the possibilities and reasoning the probabilities are both at play in this book. Kids enjoy the wonder of dinosaurs and this book both inspires imagination and develops reason. But not so! You'll have to read it to see. After trying the fastest, lo-o-ongest, softest, smallest, and scariest dinosaur, it seemed that his pet search would only end in disappointment. As it turns out, dino pets of any kind have their own set of complications. In this story a young boy happened upon a Dino Pets store, and so begins the plot: "I got a dino for a pet, the BIGGEST dino I could get." One can imagine the problems about to arise, so it is not surprising when the boy needs to change his choice of pet. It's difficult to decide which pet is the best, especially when it's a comparison of dinosaur pets. This is a fun, imaginative, and educational book. I only rate this four out of five stars because the rhythm is sometimes uneven. Kendall’s bright and friendly illustrations really bring the story to life and don’t make the dinosaurs seem scary. Kids may enjoy listening to the rhyme in Dino Pets and seeing the funny scenes when the dinosaurs interact with humans. I like that it shows an assortment of dinosaurs that are not often used in other books, and an author’s note at the back tells the name of each dinosaur featured in the book as well as some information about it. He runs out of dinosaurs to get from the pet shop and is sad, but in the end, all the dinos come back to him because, “No one likes to sleep alone.” This is a cute story about trying to find just the right pet that adds in the clever turn of the pets being dinosaurs. He picks the biggest dino, the smallest, the longest, the scariest, but either they don’t fit in his house, they run away, or they frighten his family. Dino Pets follows a young boy who takes home all different kinds of dinosaurs for pets, but none of them works out. I had used Dino Pets with one- and two-year-olds during our unit on dinosaurs, and they always enjoyed it. I recently came across this book at the library and remembered using it in my classroom when I was a preschool teacher. While this build recommends using your Spell Specialization for Phantasmal Killer, feel free to swap that up for any other spell that would benefit if you prefer. There are plenty of memes on the net regarding Nenio’s ability to take down late-game bosses with a single cast of Phantasmal Killer and this build aims to enable that while also keeping some general flexibility. It aims to use the unique aspects of Scroll Savant to their fullest extent and abuse powerful Illusion spells as much as possible. This build is a simple and effective one. It’s also worth noting that Scroll Savant is more effective in this game than you may think thanks to the abundance of Scrolls to pick up and the class’s ability to make them more effective based on your class level. This build appears to lend itself to Nenio being a Crowd Controller through Illusion spells and whatever else she can get her hands on, but it’s quite easy to bring her up to snuff as an offensive caster who can go toe-to-toe with the likes of Ember. Nenio focuses on the Illusion school of magic, which is a very decent school to specialize in thanks to the existence of spells like Phantasmal Web and especially Phantasmal Killer, which Nenio can be lethal with. This is a Wizard archetype with a focus on scrolls. Nenio will join the party at level three as a pure Scroll Savant. That said, one of the most fun things about Pathfinder is thinking about how to build your characters, and Nenio is no exception. Sticking around with Nenio can be a very rewarding experience, especially if you enjoy puzzles as her companion quests are full of them. Dirtiness is less a property of things than it is a contextual label attributed to them. Whilst cooking utensils are dirty within the context of the bedroom, in the kitchen they are in the right place and hence – relatively speaking – clean. Neither is dirty in an absolute sense, but is considered so due to its out-of-place-ness. Similarly, food is not necessarily dirty, “but it is dirty to leave cooking utensils in the bedroom” (idem: 37). Douglas illustrates these points with mundane examples: shoes, for instance, are not dirty in themselves, “but it is dirty to place them on the dining table” (idem: 44). It is a label for “all events which blur, smudge, contradict or otherwise confuse accepted classifications” (Douglas 1968: 50), and, importantly, it is a relative term – “what is clean in relation to one thing may be unclean in relation to another” (Douglas 1966: 10). “Where there is dirt there is system” (idem: 44), because dirt is not an independent, objective attribute of something, but a “residual category rejected from our normal scheme of classifications” (idem: 45). To Douglas, “there is no such thing as absolute dirt” (idem: 2), and “no single item is dirty apart from a particular system of classification in which it does not fit” (idem: vii). What follows is a summary of her theorizing on dirt in these texts.ĭirt, as we know from the famous phrase, is “matter out of place,” a definition that, Douglas states, implies two important conditions: “a set of ordered relations and a contravention of that order” (Douglas 1966: 44). ![]() Nevertheless, “matter out of place” remains the quintessential Douglassian expression and is a keystone in both of her major efforts concerning dirt: Purity and Danger (1966) and the later essay “ Pollution,” first published in the 1968 Encyclopaedia of the Social Sciences and subsequently included in the anthology Implicit Meanings (Douglas 1975). Its exact origins are unclear, but the earliest known version appears in the record of an 1853 speech given to the Royal Agricultural Society by Lord Palmerston (who would later go on to be the fifth Prime Minister of the United Kingdom) (Fardon 2013). ![]() Noise as “sound out of place”: investigating the links between Mary Douglas’ work on dirt and sound studies research -ĭespite it becoming her most famous saying, the phrase “dirt is matter out of place” was not actually coined by Mary Douglas. It argues that far more than simply giving rise to the definition “sound out of place,” Douglas’ classic anthropological work can be used as the basis for an integrated “theory of noise,” deepening our understanding of what it means when we describe a sound as “noise” and drawing attention to the ambiguous, transgressive and dangerous qualities and potentials of noise. This article corrects this omission by undertaking a close reading of Douglas’ writing on “dirt” and linking it to contemporary sound studies research. Beyond this, however, no effort has been directed towards exploring the link between dirt and noise or seeing how far the analogy between the two extends. Where attempts have been made, many have settled on a definition of noise as “sound out of place,” a reformulation of Mary Douglas’ definition of “dirt” as “matter out of place” (Douglas 1966: 44). ![]() However, due in large part to the fact that judgements about what constitutes noise are highly subjective, researchers have often struggled to define it. “Noise” is an important subject in sound studies research. ![]() ![]() As the material falls into the black hole, it spirals around to form a flattened disc, as shown here, heating up as it does so.
